Records & paperwork

Records, vet care, breeding management, whelping and sale/transfer — the paperwork side.

  • RecordsStandard (must)

Keep a record for every animal and every litter, and hold them for at least 2 years after the animal dies or is sold or rehomed.

  • Vet care & vaccinationStandard (must)

Give your animals regular health checks and prompt veterinary care whenever they need it.

  • Breeding managementStandard (must)

Follow the breeding-management rules in section 10 of the SA standards. Note that a 2026 rewrite of these rules is pending.

  • Whelping & rearingStandard (must)

Follow the code's whelping and rearing standards for housing, care and weaning of the litter.

  • Sale & transferStandard (must)

Follow the sale and transfer standards in section 8; the minimum sale age of 8 weeks comes from the Dog and Cat Management Act.

Care & premises

Housing, environment, cleaning, food and water, daily care and transport — the setup side.

  • Staffing & competencyStandard (must)

The owner is responsible for the animals being attended to daily, and larger facilities must have a trained person on site.

  • Emergency & securityStandard (must)

Keep fire-fighting equipment on site, and have a full emergency plan (larger facilities) or a simple written procedure (smaller ones).

  • Housing & spaceStandard (must)

Provide weatherproof, durable enclosures that give each animal enough room to move freely.

  • EnvironmentStandard (must)

Maintain a controlled, comfortable environment with suitable temperature, lighting and ventilation.

  • CleaningStandard (must)

Follow the cleaning and hygiene standards in section 6.3.

  • Food & waterStandard (must)

Follow the code's food and water standards — constant clean water and a complete, balanced diet.

  • Daily care, exercise & enrichmentStandard (must)

Follow the code's daily-care standards for exercise, socialisation, grooming and handling.

  • TransportStandard (must)

Follow the transport standards in section 11 so animals travel safely and comfortably.

  • EuthanasiaStandard (must)

Follow the code's humane euthanasia standards — carried out humanely by a suitably qualified person.
